DRC Ebola Crisis Overwhelms Health System
There have been 232 fatalities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo from an outbreak of Ebola, which has affected almost 900 individuals. The disease is killing a healthcare system which has already been weakened by civil unrest and underfunding. Of those who died, 17 are medical staff; 75 medical staff have been infected because of inadequate personal protection equipment like masks and gloves. The outbreak is caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, which was spreading unknown since the announcement on May 15, and the outbreak is not at its peak. The worry is that there are reports of death cases from symptoms similar to Ebola in displacement camps; however, the residents refuse to be tested.
